Press Release: Franklin Basketball Association Announces Staff Transitions

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE, Pukekohe, New Zealand – July 7, 2025

The Franklin Basketball Association (FBA) today announced the resignation of two key staff members, Joe Reddish, Director of Basketball, and Samara Funnell, Clubs and Community Manager, who are departing to pursue an exciting career opportunity in Europe.

Joe Reddish has been involved with FBA as a player growing up, coaching part time and more full time since 2020 but more recently been a cornerstone of FBA for the past five years, driving basketball operations with a focus on player development, program innovation, and strategic growth. His leadership has strengthened the association’s reputation as a leading basketball community in New Zealand. Samara Funnell, also with FBA for five years, has been instrumental in fostering community engagement, expanding club participation, player development, and building strong relationships across the region. Their combined efforts have significantly advanced FBA’s mission and laid a solid foundation for future success.

Joe Reddish has secured a prestigious role as an Assistant Coach with a 1st Division team in Europe, renowned for its elite players and coaches and recognized as one of the world’s top basketball leagues.

Samara Funnell will join the Team in a dynamic role, supporting team logistics and management while also serving as a Player Development Coach, an exceptional opportunity that promises significant career growth and future prospects.

“We are immensely grateful for the passion, experience, and dedication that Joe and Samara have brought to Franklin Basketball,” said Stacey Davis, Chairperson of the FBA Board. “While their departure is a significant loss for our community, we are incredibly proud of their contributions and excited for their new chapter. Franklin Basketball has played a key role in their career development, and we wish them every success in Europe.”

Reflecting on their time at FBA, both Joe and Samara expressed deep gratitude and optimism for the association’s future:

“It’s been an amazing four-year journey for me here at Franklin Basketball, and I am so proud of what we have built together and are building upon for the years to come. I am thankful for the whole community and everyone’s support during my time here. Whilst a new opportunity arises, I will still be supporting from afar and look forward to the continued growth of the best association in New Zealand,” said Samara Funnell.

“This is a bittersweet moment for me. On one hand, we have an amazing opportunity waiting for us; on the other, we move on from an amazing club. Franklin will always be home to me. I will always have a deep connection with lifelong relationships and pride for our Association. I believe in our club’s direction and am excited for what’s next for FBA,” said Joe Reddish.

To ensure a smooth transition, FBA has a comprehensive plan in place for Term 3. Existing staff members, supported by an increased use of part-time staff, will manage Term 3 deliverables. Jamie Reddish, FBA’s Commercial Manager, will provide additional support in basketball operations, including aspects of the General Manager role, while working with the FBA Board to implement an updated organisational structure. This structure will align with FBA’s Strategic Plan and may include revised roles and new positions, which will be advertised in due course.
